Music & Gender

Trying to exactly figure out how I even want to start this here blog…is kind of hard to me. Not because I don’t know what to write, but more so of I don’t know how I want to go about it. Music and Gender can be so broad but that also depends on that persons perspective. Honestly for me, A few things and people popped into my head, 1 instantly being “ Angella Christie” she is an amazing Gosple Female Saxophonist! She came to me first of course, because I myself am a female saxophonist and it is just not many of us! Unless you heard of Lisa Simpson, she will forever be a legend for any female saxophonist. My point is she came to me because yes it is very rare to see.

Which brings me to one of the people who many where shocked and shunned by because SHE, yes she was a women who is a beast on the drums! And yes again, it’s something so taken back by a women of percussion. She is “Sheila E,” back in the 1970s began her career as a percussionist playing for “ George Duke Band” and a few years later launched her solo career as a drummer for Prince. This is a clip of her playing from 10 years ago and today at the age of 66, she is still playing.

As of 2024, of course now there are plenty of wonderful female saxophonist and percussionist, I’m sure as many other different types of musicians as well. But as I mentioned in the beginning, Music and Gender can be so broad but that also depends on that persons perspective. The Next person I bring to the table is an American singer rapper and he is known by the name of Rod Wave.

Rod Wave to me plays a role in this Music & Gender world that we live in. Rod Wave as a male literally wears his heart on his sleeve, and he will sing his heart out while doing it. It’s not the typical norm to be as expressive as a male, especially when it comes to their feelings to, from, or about women specifically. Letting it be known his heart is broken or he has been crying, whatever of that sort. He is going to let it be known he is hurting and he don’t mind putting his pain in his music to get it off his chest. Many people can’t relate to Rod’s music men & women both. I love many many of his songs but one of my favorites is called “ Heart 4 Sale”. In this song again, he is expressing that his heart is now for sale because he just can’t take the pain anymore. He’s tried different things but it’s not working so back to focusing on stacking his money. Below is the lyric video :
Seems like while there might be a few social norms when it comes to Music & Gender, they all are loved in some way, shape, or form. We may not even realize sometimes and it’s actually interesting to see. I hope the few people I shared makes you look at it in my perspective or maybe form your own.
