Music & Our New Playlist!!!

Being apart of this class has been such a rollercoaster and I'm so excited to have had this experience and learn some pretty great things. This blog we will be creating our playlist as a class, and I think I've chosen 4 songs that were all very different than my normal musical taste. I did a little dipping and dabbling in South and North America finding some wonderful artist and musicians, lets get into it!
First, I would love to introduce Mento Music. “Mento Music” Is the first form of music in Jamaica. It is considered traditional even though it is slowly dying down as most musicians are much older and the young aren’t keeping up as much. Mento music also is what came before any Reggae, Rock steady and dancehalls. In this video you will hear sort of a small ensemble of men, singing and playing. The vocals consist of harmonies and they also use instruments such as chordophones, idiophones, as well as an instrument called “Rumba Box”Which is like 6 different drums with 6 different sounds. ( Jamaica/ North America/ Traditional)

Second we will step into South America for a little bit of a modern feel.
I was really impressed to run across this song, & added it to my playlist. This song is called “ Gosta de Rua by Felipe & Rodrigo”. This is a duet and very modern, includes 2 vocalist with full live band. You have a drum set, keyboard, bongos, and I even noticed a key tar!!! They had a lot of rhythm and harmony as well as soul. After looking up the song in English, I learned its definitely a break up song basically saying your for the streets, get your things and leave. Which explains so much solo in their voices! (Brazil/ South America/ Modern)
I hope you guys loved that song just as much as I did, next I want to go back to North America because I ran across a Corrico. A "Corrico" is a Mexican traditional story told through narrative ballads.
The song I chose to use is called “Y Llegaste Tú” I honestly chose this style because it was really different. You have a lot of Aerophones and a few harmonies as well as a drum kit. This style is fun because to me you definitely can tell its telling a story and with this song in particular the band springs to life as the lead singer details how his life has changed with love in it. (Mexico/ North America/ Traditional)

Lastly to conclude all 4 songs, I definitely saved the best for long. I hope this last song surprises the readers just as much as it did for me. For this one it was very different and fun. I found this group named, “Dengue Dengue Dengue”. Not only did the music of this group stick out to me, but some call them the Peruvian Daft Punk because they wear masks during their sets. This DJ duo are an audio-visual duo from Lima, Peru that creates electronic music from psychedelic cumbia. With me being a Contemporary Music Major, I do also utilize a lot of midi, electronic tracks, or even gadgets so to me this was really cool. Still makes you want to dance and be involves some way and some how. Unlike the other examples I used, this is more of an instrumental, not much vocals involved. Take a look and see how creative this duo is, overall I hope you enjoyed my playlist!
